The Romans withdrew from the British Isles and Germanic tribes invaded and conquered the existing Celts. Viking invaders then arrived and the Island was divided by the Saxons and the Danes. Old norse mixed with old English. In 1066, the Normans, who were originally Vikings who had settled in France, then sailed north to invade the Island, bringing the French language and Latin priests. Thousands of new words flowed in.
