The History of Life on Earth

This is honestly the most important knowledge that every human on the planet should be taught.  All life on this planet is made up of DNA and all DNA traces itself back to a single organism.  All life on the planet has a common universal ancestor, and then we all evolved separately.

SciShow does an excellent job of explaining everything that science knows and has observed about the history of life on our shared planet.

Part 1:

In the warm oceans and carbon rich atmosphere of early Earth, self replicated molecules formed the earliest life.  Single celled bacteria evolved around at least 3.5 billion years ago.  Cyanobacteria evolved to obtain energy from the sun, rather than from their surroundings.  These organisms exploded in population and a byproduct of their metabolic process is producing oxygen, something that was toxic to the other forms of anaerobic bacteria in this age.  Pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere cooled the planet.  Life then had to find a way to use the surplus of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Around 2 billions years ago, an anaerobic cell ate an aerobic bacterium and produced a bigger cell that had more energy.  This was endosymbiosis.  Eukaryotic life had a distinct advantage over existing prokaryotic life in that it could produce more energy and become more complex.


Part 2:

At the beginning of the Paleozoic Era, complex life exploded.  Predation began as complex life required more energy to consume other organisms for more energy.  Prey then evolved defenses and they themselves required more energy.  All life began and only existed in the world's oceans up until this point.  Life eventually evolved a way to make it on to land.  It was a slow process since there was no soil on land.  Soil only accumulated slowly as the land was colonized.  Placoderms and tetrapods evolved jaws and legs and life got even more complex.  Life evolved amniotic eggs and were able to leave the oceans completely.  Life took a huge leave when it evolved to eat plants.



Part 3:

Dinosaur time!  Life figured out how to walk on two legs on land.  Life also become very large!  Vertebrates evolved the ability to fly.  Earliest true birds evolved.  Flowering plants evolved and pollinating insects and animals.



Par 4:

Mammals take over the world after the dinosaurs go extinct from a meteorite impact.  A mammal returned to the seas and is the ancestors of whales today.  Grass evolved and took over the planet.  Corn, wheat, and rice are all grasses and most land mammals evolved with grasses so as to eat and survive in grassy habitats.  The continent of Antartica moving directly to the southern pole cooled the Earth enough to form ice caps at both poles.  This is the first time on Earth this was possible in almost 500 million years.  Ice ages then became cyclical and dozens occurred over millions of years.
