One of my favorite science fiction movies of all time is The Fifth Element... but if you were to ask me, "Why?" I would not have been able to describe or identify what the writers and director did to me to make me (as a man) like this movie so much. Pop Culture Detective beautifully explains to me why I have been conditioned to enjoy it.
I am not going to stop liking these movies or stop liking this trope, but it makes me happy to know how I am being manipulated and evolutionarily why I enjoy this genre of story telling. It is just a story telling fantasy and I can choose to enjoy it as one of many different types of fantasy story telling modes.
The guys in these movies end up looking very pathetic though... it will probably be hard to see another movie with this formula and not have it be ruined by having this knowledge. When I went and saw Wonder Woman, I realized it was the same concept. It did make me groan a little bit.
I love how I also enjoyed all the movies where the trope is inverted: Pleasantville, Starman, Big, Blast From the Past.
