The universe is expanding and the rate of its expansion is accelerating.
Dark energy is fueling this acceleration.
1) BIG RIP
Gravity is not strong enough to keep things together and space forms between matter faster than it can be held together. Space will eventually expand faster than the speed of light and matter will break down to individual particles and fail to interact with each other.
2) HEAT DEATH / BIG FREEZE
All matter converts to radiation. Universe just goes dark due to entropy. Even black holes evaporate over trillions of years.
3) BIG CRUNCH & BIG BOUNCE
Eventually the rate of expansion of the universe will stop, and if there is not enough dark energy, gravity will take over again and all matter will come back together and collapse in on itself.
