What Causes the Northern Lights?

The auroras are the result of charges particles coming from the sun hitting our atmosphere and then coming down the magnetic lines of the magnetosphere of the Earth towards the poles.  The high speed particles strike gases in the upper atmosphere and excite them, giving off energy.
